Tour diary 19.12.2001
HELLO EVERYONE! It’s Alex here again. I’m writing to fill you, the fan and friend, in on all the gossip and craziness that is my touring life. All has been going great and it has been wonderful being able to meet you all (If I haven’t met you yet, I promise I will be coming to your city very soon). Sunday, December 16th was our last show in Miami which went very well. The rest of the boys: Billy(bass) Nate(drums) Sean(guitar), went home for the holidays. I however, am staying in Miami for a few days to relax and maybe get a tan on my poor pale little body. I usually get more of a “pink” or a “f*ck! don’t touch me” kind of tan. Anyway, since the last tour diary I have had the most exciting, deathly tiring, and surreal two weeks. They began with our video debuting on TRL(soon went to #3), our single “Wherever You Will Go” hitting #1 on some charts, and we entered the top ten biggest songs in America! There were many memorable shows but I will tell you guys about some. In Washington DC we played a show with Train and Barenaked Ladies for like 10,000 people. It was a great crowd and an honor to be playing with those bands. Our show went fantastic and shortly after the Barenaked Ladies came to me wondering if I would sing the closing song of the night with them. I was so flattered and immediately said yes. It was a Christmas song from the 80’s that I had never really heard before. Luckily my tour manager happened to have the CD so I learned part of the verse and played the song like a million times in the bus. Later at the end of the show they introduced me and called me on stage. The crowed freaked and I actually got nervous. I usually never do. So I nailed the part and rocked out with the band. Sean was filming all of it because I film like absolutely everything. I got the rest of my band on stage and we all sang the last chorus over and over together arm in arm. It was really an emotional thing for me. I am so freakin proud of my band, RCA, and all your help launching us to the top. Just being there with the fans and having so much fun…it was all so beautiful. Anyway, the second week progressed into what was soon to be complete insanity. We played six different shows in two days. I slept a total of 4 hours in four days, yet somehow I kept ticking(it’s good to be young….and take your vitamins). We flew a lot to get from place to place and I finally arrived in New York. What a city. With all they’ve been through, it’s still the home of the most upbeat, full of life, beautiful collection of people you could ever imagine. We played a very late 1:00 A.M. show in Time Square. Earlier there was a huge radio show at Madison Square Garden which we will hopefully be a part of next year. But playing at the after party was phenomenal. We signed afterward like we always do for hours even though we had to wake up at 5:00 A.M. for the fifth day in a row. So sleep was not an option. We did Regis and Kelly, our first national TV show! Everyone was extremely nice including good old Regis. Then we went straight to MTV to do TRL! I was so excited I felt like I did on the first day of school or something. MTV almost like welcomes you to the family not just to the show…so it was a long ordeal with much to do. When we finally got out there it was breathtaking. All the smoke and lights and screaming girls! Wow can they scream. I don’t know how Carson can still hear these days. All was going well until I hit the first chord of Wherever You Will Go and my freakin string breaks! What are the odds of that happening. So I just threw the guitar on the ground and let Sean do his thing. I guess it all went O.K. It was crazy to see all you fans who I’ve met all over the USA. A lot of you drove really far to support us and I can’t even explain how much that means to me. We would have gone outside in Time Square to sign even in the rain, but we had to drive immediately to Connecticut for a radio show that night with Jewel and Smashmouth. So I apologize for that. The next day we went to Boston for two acoustic shows. It was really intimate to play a whole show acoustic and be able to talk with the audience. They were all singing along to all the songs, it was awesome or “vibe” as we Calling boys like to say. That night we did a live syndicated on air radio interview and performance. To our surprise Lenny Kravitz was there and he hung out with us for a while. He and I answered crazy screaming girl’s calls and talked about life on the road in places like Japan and Australia. He was one of the nicest musicians I’ve met so far in the business. I got to bed that night at 3:00 AM and had to wake up at 5:00 AM yet again to catch my final flight on the tour to here, Miami. This radio show for Y100 went great and was a good farewell to this year of touring. I strongly believe next year will be a great one for the world and The Calling. I can’t wait to go home to be with my family and my cat and my vehicles and all my other toys…and my best friend Aaron who you all know. We will return to you all the beginning of next year with new shows and surprises. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday and good New Year’s Eve. Don’t party to much ’cause we’ve got a lot to do. Thanks again for reading and listening to our music. Much love and peace!
